Bad Girls of the Bible

We have absolutely loved the past 4 weeks - Learning about the Bad Girls of the Bible - and the lessons we can learn from them.

It's often difficult to relate to the perfect people in the bible that we aspire to be... We will never pray enough, or be sacrificial enough, and are we listening to God enough? But we aren't like the bad people either....
The blessing of studying the Bad Girls of the Bible, is seeing some common traits that we can relate to, and seeing just how unstuck we can become when we allow these traits to be part of who we are.
From Lil we learned about Rahab, a prostitute in the land of Jericho, which was about to be defeated by the Israelites. God knew who she was, and the life she led, but it wasn't too late, God had a plan for her.
Unami spoke about The Woman at the Well, a nameless Samaritan woman who met Jesus, the 7th man... She had been married 5 times, and was not married to the man she was now with - doing the same thing over and over will not bring change. Her life was transformed by meeting Jesus, the hole in her life filled, and not with another marriage.
Sesina bought us the tale of Lot's Wife, she has only a fleeting cameo in the story of the destruction of Sodom, instructed by angels to leave the city immediately and not look back, the family hesitated and argued. They eventually left, and she almost made it - but looked back and was turned to a pillar of salt. When we are asked by God to do something, our obedience must be immediate and complete.
Livvy chose the tale of Michael, more easily recognized as King David's first wife. She loved the handsome musician and man of God dearly, but it's not recorded how he felt about her... Michael's story is painful, David fled to escape his father in law, King Saul, who was trying to kill him, never came back, and took many years to send for Michael, by which time she had been remarried, he had multiple wives, and Saul was dead. When Michael returned to David, her pride, and perhaps distance from God caused her to pick a fight with David over his completely uninhibited worship of God as the Ark of the Covenant returned to Israel. Sometimes the things we love most about our loved ones end up being the things that annoy us most, but we need to remember to be quick to listen, and slow to speak, and slow to get angry. If Micheal had managed this, she may have had along and happy life alongside her husband, but we do not hear of her again after this.
Melba told of the baddest of them all, Jezebel married to King Ahab for political strength, she ruled him and the nation of Israel with her determination, and loyalty to HER God, Baal. Ahab did not prevent this, he was walked over by his wife, together they were an unholy alliance, neither of them would have had a story without the other. Good qualities like loyalty and determination are evil in the wrong context, check who you make your allies. Jezebel had time to seek God's forgiveness as her death was foretold many years before the prophecy came to pass. We all have that opportunity too, to come back to God whilst there is still time.
From Jacqui we heard of the Sinful Woman, another woman known for her situation, not her name. She had lived a rough life, yet she had heard of Jesus and must have though he was something special because she attended a dinner that he was invited to, and silently worshiped him with her tears, kisses, and anointing his feet with perfume. All the while she was subject to the judgment and disdain of the host of the dinner, a Pharisee by the name of Simon. Jesus heard his thoughts and stood up for this woman. We are often attacked when we get close to Jesus, and Jesus has told us that trouble will come, but we can take heart, be reassured, because Jesus has overcome the world, the victory is won.
Sarah urged us not to be like Delilah, not to be servants to our greed, not to play mind games, and to say no to our temptations. Delilah was loved by Samson, which was pretty one sided when you look at the story. When she was offered money to catch Samson out, she took the opportunity. She played mind games and nagged and was a key player in the downfall of Samson, and ultimately herself.
Bek delved into the temptation of Eve, the first woman had nothing to want for, she had all she could need or want. Yet when the serpent appeared, she engaged in conversation with him, she got her facts confused and embellished God's words, she let curiosity lead to doubt and gave in to temptation. Be aware of the devil and his ability to make you question and doubt. Keep God at the centre by keeping His word close and staying strong in your faith.
